Did you know that almost HALF of
teenagers experience some
form of online harassment?
The Parent's Guide provides awareness, solutions and preventative resources to keep children safe and secure online.
With defensive parenting and constant communication, parents can TEACH children about the potential dangers of social networking and EMPOWER them to protect themselves from online predators. Parents can GUARD their child’s personal information, PRESERVE their online reputation, and learn how to determine friends from "frenemies."
DEAR FELLOW PARENT,
The words you are about to read may save your child’s life.
The Parent’s Guide to Texting, Facebook, and Social Media was inspired by a personal and difficult situation that my teenage daughter went through.
A few years ago, my daughter, a straight A student, a student body officer, and a cheerleader with 50 best friends, ended up being targeted by a group of bullies.
At the time, I wasn’t aware of the gravity of her situation. They were stalking her, harassing her, and they physically threatened her with thousands of text messages and Facebook posts.
When she came home from school, she would go to her room and close her door. She stopped going out with her friends, and she didn’t want to attend ANY school functions.
Had I know what was really happening on Facebook and in those text messages, I could have HELPED her.
And really, the problems that my daughter faced then have now become an epidemic.
Let me give you a few statistics:
•Recent studies show that almost 50% of teenagers have been harassed online.
•And that almost 40% of teens have admitted to sexting.
•And this one really floors me … 71% of our children receive messages from strangers online, and 30% of those children contemplate meeting those strangers face- to- face.
At the time my daughter was being harassed there were ZERO solutions or tools to help me, or any parent, deal with and defend against these types of difficult situations.
That was two years ago. Since then I’ve interviewed thousands of teens and spoken to hundreds of parents about virtual harassment. These discussions lead me to write this book and create the One-Click Safety Kit and Companion Workbooks.
It’s my mission to help families everywhere understand the proactive measures that must be taken to minimize their children’s exposure to the hazards of growing up in a digital world.
My daughter survived her cyberbullying experience.
But 14 year old Megan Meier did not.
Megan’s death is one of a growing number of deaths of children who committed suicide after being bullied online. Megan’s mother, Tina, runs the Megan Meier Foundation in her name, and I’m donating all the royalties from todays sale of my book to her foundation.
This threat to our children is very serious, and growing daily. As a parent, or even friend of others who have children, it is YOUR responsibility to care for the safety of our children.
Through my daughter's experience, I’ve also learned what parents can do to be proactive and prevent a one-click nightmare from occurring in their home, like:
- I found out that no matter how close you are to your child, most kids, even yours, won’t tell you if they are being bullied online, or if they are the one doing the bullying
- I learned how to empower our children by teaching them how to block unwanted text messages
- When it comes to social media, I learned the importance of constant and open communication
- I realized how mean and scary a social network can be, and how important it is to watch what’s happening on a regular basis
- I’ve discovered that the police take cyberbullying very seriously, and I should have obtained a restraining order against the three girls who were responsible for the ongoing physical threats
- My daughter taught me that when people say things over and over again about you, that eventually you start to believe what they are saying is true, even though it couldn’t be farther from the truth
- I’ve learned that being threatened on a social network is like being singled out and placed on the world’s stage for everyone to watch and join in on the slander. It’s damaging, and can have horrible repercussions…
The Parent’s Guide to Texting, Facebook, and Social Media is the first book of its kind.
My mission is to provide every parent with awareness, solutions, and preventative resources to keep their children safe and secure while they’re online.
With defensive parenting and constant communication, you can teach your children about the potential dangers of social networking, empower them to protect themselves from online predators, guard their personal information, preserve their online reputation, and learn how to determine friends from “frenemies”.
Knowledge is power! If you are aware of what’s happening, you can get involved and avoid a one-click nightmare from occurring in your home.
Sincerely,
